The first days of a new school year are always full of emotion: excitement, curiosity, a few tears (from kids and sometimes parents!), and so many new possibilities. At Home For Your Heart School, a ministry of Blue Grass Church, we have just completed our first few days with our students ages 1–5 in Toddler Time, Jumpstart, Preschool, and Pre-K. Our hallways are already buzzing with laughter, songs, and the beginnings of beautiful friendships.

One of the most powerful parts of these early days is watching our school community begin to form. Children are learning new names, discovering shared interests, and finding their place in the group. Parents are connecting at drop-off and pick-up, sharing smiles of encouragement and the common bond of wanting the very best for their children.

For some children, these early days can be a hard transition. The new sights, sounds, and expectations take a lot of mental and emotional energy. It is common for children to experience what is called “after-school restraint collapse,” where they hold it together all day at school and then release their feelings at home. This can look like tears, irritability, or clinginess, even if they had a wonderful day. If this happens, it is not a sign that something is wrong. It is simply their way of processing all they are learning and feeling. Offering a snack, some quiet time, and gentle reassurance can help them recharge. Over time, their stamina will grow, and the after-school meltdowns will lessen.

These first days are also the time when routines and school behaviors begin to take root. Our teachers and staff know that stepping into a new environment can feel big, even overwhelming, for little hearts. That is why we move gently but intentionally, guiding children through first-week jitters and helping them settle into rhythms that will give them confidence. Whether it is learning how to line up, where to put their backpack, or how to ask for help, every small skill is a step toward independence and readiness for the journey beyond HFYH.

For some families, the transition can feel bittersweet. Watching your child walk into a classroom for the first time can stir a mix of pride and ache. But take heart, by giving your child this opportunity to learn, grow, and form relationships outside of home, you are paving an easier path for them. You are helping them build resilience, social skills, and the ability to adapt, all vital tools for life.

We believe these early years are a gift from God, a season where seeds of character, curiosity, and kindness are planted. And we are honored to partner with you in tending to those seeds. Our teachers are not only educators, but encouragers, cheerleaders, and guides, ushering each child toward the confidence and joy that will carry them into Kindergarten and beyond.

To every parent and caregiver who sent your child off to school this week: you are doing the right thing. You are setting them up for success. You are building a strong foundation for their future, and we are so grateful to walk alongside you.

Here is to a year of friendship, growth, and God’s goodness together.
